In recent years, hardwood high yield pulps (HYP) have found an increasing application in many paper grades. However, the physical strengths such as tear and tensile of HYP are usually lower than that of chemical pulps, which can hinder its application in some paper grades. By far, bleached wheat straw pulp (BWSP) is the main non-wood chemical pulp in China, however, it has low bulk, low opacity and poor drainage. In this paper, the synergistic interactions of HYP and BWSP were studied. First, the potential of adding a small amount of BWSP to aspen HYP to improve its strength properties while preserving its high bulk property was explored; then, a small amount of high-quality aspen HYP was used to improve the BWSP properties at laboratory scale. The results show that with the addition of 5%~10% refined BWSP, the tensile index of the HYP can be improved by about 10-20% without sacrificing the bulk to a significant extent. Also, adding 5%~20% aspen HYP into unrefined or refined BWSP can compensate for the drawbacks of BWSP, improving its drainage, bulk, light scattering coefficient and opacity.
