Study in the joint sealants of the concrete pavements

Silicone rubber is acknowledged to show perfect properties, such as weather resistance, nontoxic, tearing strength over a broad temperature region, high durable and these make this class of materials very attractive selection for use in the outdoor applications as a sealant. In this research, silicon rubber, which consists of polysiloxane oligomer, filler, plasticizer, crosslinking agent, catalyst and tackifier, etc, has been prepared to be used as the joint sealant of concrete pavements. The preparation and the mechanism of the silicone rubber were introduced. The properties of the silicone rubber, including adhesive properties, chemical stability, fatigue resistance and thaw-freezing stability, were characterized. The results exhibited that the silicone rubber shows good adhesive properties with the concrete slab and no failure was observed in the interface between the silicone rubber and concrete slab under the condition of chemical solution and thaw-freezing. Fatigue resistance of silicone rubber is 1.1 to 1.5 times more than that of polysulfide sealant and the fatigue equation was obtained.
