In-wheel motor drive system that the torque of each drive wheel can be independently controlled has high transmission efficiency. But the main shortcoming of in-wheel motor drive system is the large non-sprung mass which influences the automobile ride. The paper has introduced the basic structure and working principle of a novel electric wheel drive system with reducer for non-steering wheel. On the foundation of parameters calculation and structure design, the virtual model and movement simulation are built by CATIA and ADAMS. Because of the arrangement that the motor and half parts of the reducer are placed on the vehicle body, the system maintains the advantage of in-wheel motor drive system while the non-sprung mass is effectively decreased.
