The Village of Glen Ellyn, IL, an older established residential community, experienced storm drainage problems in their Kenilworth Basin. RJN Group analyzed the system and developed recommendations that contained flows within the sewers while minimizing construction impact on the existing cityscape and residents. The project site is a fully developed residential neighborhood with mature trees and public schools located to the north and south limits of the project. Maintaining pedestrian and resident safety were also primary project goals. Much of the existing pipe was located 15- to 17-feet beneath 28 large parkway trees and partially under the concrete pavement (with monolithic curb) of the roadway. The final design used pipe bursting on three pipe segments. About 500 feet of horizontal directional drilling was also employed to replace a very shallow 8" storm sewer with a deeper 16" IPS sewer at the beginning of the project. Excavation for open cut construction was needed only for a short segment of shallow sewer line and for the drilling pits. The total construction length was about 1700 feet. The trenchless construction techniques minimized the negative impacts to the mature landscape and existing pavement and disruption to the community. While the street was closed to through traffic the area was open at all times to local traffic, pedestrians, and schoolchildren attending either school.
