Superior Energy Performance~(cm): A Roadmap for Continual Improvement in Energy Efficiency

Superior Energy Performance~(cm) is a forthcoming voluntary certification program that willmove industrial and commercial facilities onto a path of continuous energy performanceimprovement-while maintaining competitiveness. This paper describes the certificationprogram for U.S. industry, as well as benefits to collaboration partners that deliver the program,such as state programs, utilities, and supply chain partners. Superior Energy Performancecertification requires facilities to meet all requirements of ISO 50001, the first global energymanagement standard. In addition, facilities must demonstrate improved energy performanceusing the program’s transparent, globally accepted system for validating energy managementimprovements. Superior Energy Performance is envisioned to foster market demand for verified,sustained improvements in energy performance and to increase adoption of the ISO 50001standard. The standard, which was developed with input from representatives from more than 50countries, is broadly applicable to various sectors of national economies and could influence asmuch as 60 percent of the world’s energy demand (EIA 2007). At the international level, theGlobal Superior Energy Performance partnership is working to harmonize a range of nationallyaccredited energy performance certification programs that reward strategic energy managementand third-party-verified energy reductions.
