USING AGENT-BASED SIMULATION AND BUSINESS PROCESS MODELING TO EVALUATE THE PERFORMANCE OF AIRPORT SECURITY SYSTEMS – A CONJOINT APPROACH

The airport infrastructure represents a particularly critical element of the national economyand the national security situation. Therefore, necessary precautions must be taken againstpotential threats. So the question emerges how can security systems and processes beoptimized for the protection of the airport infrastructure?The goal of this presented research project is the modular modeling of the airport and itsaccompanying processes in the context of an agent-based simulation environment. The focusis the realistic representation of social behavior of passengers and airport employees todemonstrate the decisions of human individuals as well as passengers’ interaction amongthemselves and with their environment. The simulation carries an important contributionwhich is the analysis of the protection mechanisms for passengers during the use of the airportinfrastructure. In addition to security matters, the developed simulation can be used asplanning and decision making instrument which also gives special consideration for the safetyand cost component. This paper describes the scientific goals, ongoing work and initial resultsof the research project on critical infrastructure security.
