A Systematic Approach to Implementing Operator Training Simulators

This work describes the need for a systematic approach for implementing Operator TrainingSimulators in order to obtain maximum trainee benefits. A great deal of effort and expense goes intothe technical development of an Operator Training Simulator without a commensurate effort inplanning for its implementation. Because of this, the benefits of the Operator Training Simulator (OTS)are not fully realized and after limited initial use – often for a new plant start up, an OTS falls into disuse.A proven systematic 5 step approach for implementing Operator Training Simulators over the long termis described in detail, along with testimonials from OTS users. The 5 steps include: Identification,Normal Operations, Start up and Shut down, Troubleshooting, and Optimization. The use of OTS todevelop applied skills such as Cooperation, Communication, Supervision, and Situational Awareness arealso discussed.
