This paper documents the results and findings of employing Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) techniques on the recent NASA Heavy Lift trade study. The paper discusses how well MBSE facilitated development of a system-of-systems architecture, and explores the effectiveness of employing MBSE to more efficiently define requirements, develop architectures, and perform trades. This paper also attempts to examine the cultural paradigm shifts required for MBSE to be adopted by mature company with existing Systems Engineering processes and tools; and, identifies and quantifies any realized and/or potential benefits and drawbacks of using a desktop Model-Based Systems Engineering approach on a complex real-world systems-of-systems space project.
