The obtaining of the Ni-3Fe intermetallic compound by dry mechanical alloying in argon atmosphere in a high energy planetary ball mill is studied versus the filling factor of the vial. For this purpose the vial is filled with a charge of powder and ball ranging from 10 to 90 % of its volume. The vial rotation speed, disc rotation speed and ball mass/powder mass ratio are kept constant during all milling experiments. The formation of the intermetallic compound is studied by X-ray diffraction. Particles morphology and their chemical homogeneity are studied by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis (EDX). The correlation of the particle size distribution and of the degree of compound obtaining by milling versus vial filling factor is discussed.
