In fluid power systems, faulty components are often recognised by leakage. It is necessary for safety reasons to detect faults in an early phase by establishing a suitable diagnostic system. The diagnostic system presented in this paper is based on the inconsistency between the actual process behaviour and its expected behaviour as described by an analytical model. Simulation results and data acquired from an actual system are compared on-line in a suitable environment and the residuals are evaluated for the fault detection process. Fault diagnosis is achieved by interaction of modelling information, on-line measured values of the system variables and stored knowledge.
