GRAPHICAL MODELLING AND SIMULATION OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

The integrative planning of New Product Development (NPD) projects considering complex process, product and organisational interdependencies requires innovative methods and tools. In this context, the aims of this paper are twofold: First, a simulation model for the planning of NPD projects is presented. The simulation model is based on the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) and allows the prediction of probability density functions for project duration and costs. It considers information dependencies between project activities, iteration probabilities and rework. Second, an approach to create the input data for the simulation is presented. The approach combines the DSM-based dependency and structure modelling technique with graphical process modelling.
