Highly transparent Nd:Lu_2O_3 ceramics were fabricated from synthesized nanocystalline powder after being sintered in flowing H_2 atmosphere at 1880°C for 8 h. The linear optical transmittance of the polished sample with 1.4mm thickness reaches 75.5% at the wavelength of 1080nm. The absorption band at 807nm has a FWHM of about 4 nm and the absorption cross section σ_(abs) at 807 nmis 2.998×10~(-20)cm~2. According to the Judd-Ofelt theory, the intensity parameters Ω_2, Ω_4 and Ω_6 of 3at.%Nd:Lu_2O_3 sample are calculated to be 5.26× 10~(-20) cm~2, 13.11×10~(-20)cm~2 and 8.37×10~(-20)cm~2 respectively. The radiative lifetime τ_(rad) of the ~4F_(3/2) level attains 165 μs.
