Risk Assessment of a Generator Rejection Scheme Implemented in a Wind Farm

System Integrity Protection Schemes (SIPS) are being applied to power networks to help ensure their secure operation, particularly when they are operating close to their limits. However, failure of a SIPS to fulfill the reliability requirements of a Power System exposes the system to additional risks that might be unacceptable. A risks assessment procedure is developed in this paper to quantify the risks of a generator rejection scheme (GRS) implemented in a wind farm. The procedure is used to determine the operating costs of a GRS with different levels of redundancy in its communication network. The proposed methodology can help utilities understand how information communication technologies affect the reliability of SIPS and use the information to balance the trade-off in SIPS dependability and security, with the objective to achieve the optimum overall performance.
