Because of time constraints any undergraduate power engineering curriculum requires hard decisions about what important information to include and what to exclude. These choices can become particularly controversial when they involve choices between the algorithmic fundamentals of engineering analysis tools versus providing more practical discussions of how the tools are used. This paper provides an introduction to a panel presentation that explores these tradeoffs by focusing two of the most widely used power engineering tool, the power flow and transient stability.
