This work presents a platform for non-invasive in vitro cell monitoring activity and its use in recording the response of excitable cells to external stimuli. The platform integrates a Microelectrode Array (MEA) device, wire links and connectivity for data acquisitions systems. A MEA chip with platinum electrodes over glass substrate was designed and fabricated in two versions, with and without carbon nanotubes as surface modifier. Integration of a MEA in a single platform with outer standard connection for acquisition signalling equipment, offers versatility of multiple uses with low cost. This design aims to minimize the electrical noise for the correct acquisition of excitable cells signalling, adequate mechanical support for tissue placement, manipulation in laboratory and proper connectivity, following the standards for commercial MEA equipments. Experimental tests were performed in a neuronal measurement set up with hippocampus and retina tissues, obtaining clear signals with minimal noise level. This development offers a simple design of a passive cell monitoring platform, allowing different cell types screening and potential use in cell stimulation.
