The recent 'baby boom' in shipbuilding, followed by economic pressures to extend service lives, is leading to a growth in demand for refits and conversions. But in a buyer's market these projects will go to the most efficient refit yards. This paper describes recent rapid advances in 3D laser surveying systems, and how software technologies can exploit the rich data created to enable rapid refits and conversions. Three principal benefits can be gained: 1. accurate, right-first-time design of new construction 2. the ability to reduce dry-dock time by advanced surveying, design and project planning 3. the ability to create accurate, detailed 3D models of an as-serving vessel for its lifecycle management.
