The experience gained in years of development of 3D modelling and documentation production tools, along with the use of various off-the-shelf visualization tools, led to the development of a new TRIDENT ShipExplorer platform, designed to complement the CAD system by using the 3D model data for production purposes. TRIDENT ShipExplorer platform consists of Visualisator, Drafting, Painting, Nesting modules, etc. The modules are technically and functionally adapted to the CADDS/TRIDENT system, they operate on various platforms, and are based on in-house developed XML schema. They also provide the possibility to exchange data with other CAD systems and the integration with ERP, PDM and other systems. The article outlines our experiences in the development and application of TRIDENT ShipExplorer modules, with a description of their main functionalities. Emphasis is put on the importance they assume in the ship design process, going beyond the originally intended visualization role, and becoming a real collaboration platform essential for team work in the development of a complex product.
