PRODUCT LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT IN THE SHIPBUILDING AND SHIPPING INDUSTRIES

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) offers huge potential for process improvements and cost savings in the shipbuilding and shipping industries, due to the extremely short and highly collaborative ship development cycles and the long, maintenance-intensive life of the vessels. The challenge for the organizations involved in the ship lifecycle is to find ways how to efficiently manage and transfer the PLM-relevant information from design over operation until scrapping. This article discusses the state of PLM implementation in the shipbuilding industry and the PLM requirements of the ship owners with respect to maintenance and scrapping, emphasizing the need to establish new methods and standards for the communication of technical information.
