A DESIGN ADVISOR FOR SUPPORTING COGNITIVE ASPECTS OF HUMAN AUTOMATION INTERACTION

This paper describes an on-going effort to create a computer-based design advisor tool. The purpose of this tool is to inform aviation automation designers on design issues that impact human cognitive performance. The tool allows designers to input information on the prototype system being developed, and provides feedback regarding the quality of the design in terms of human-automation interaction. This feedback is in the form of design scores and human error probabilities. The tool is being developed specifically for flight deck automation, but the design process and underlying principles can also be applied to the nuclear industry. The design advisor is based on an extensive review of human-automation interaction research, and includes guidelines based on this literature. The tool includes seven modules, each of which evaluates a specific area of human-automation interaction vulnerabilities. These are noticability, display integration, procedures, confusability, complexity, semantic meaningfulness, and the need for mental predictions. Validation efforts are being performed to ensure that the module results agree with experimental studies and real-world data.
