At TAPPI 2007 conference in Athens, the breakthrough development of converting an extrusion coating grade from a conventional autoclave reactor to a tubular reactor process. The aim of the project was to secure long term supply to the extrusion coating market. In a time that autoclave reactors are under increasing economical and environmental pressure, it was decided to develop an extrusion coating grade using the more sustainable LDPE CTR? Technology (Clean Tubular Reactor Technology). In the mean time the corresponding SABIC? LDPE nExCoat 5 (code for the rest of this presentation is T-MFR5) has been introduced into the market and an extensive experimental design study on a Pilot Extrusion Coating Line has been performed to investigate the typical characteristics of this grade. This study clearly demonstrates the excellent exchangeability of T-MFR5 with the conventional autoclave grades as well as some clear added values such as processability and adhesion.
