Functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were explored as nanoreinforcement for epoxy/carbon fiber composites. MWNTs functionalized with carboxylic acid groups (MWNT-COOH) were dispersed in epoxy by ultrasonication and were used to fabricate functionalized MWNTs/epoxy/CF composites by the filament winding technique. Mechanical tests demonstrated that the incorporation of functionalized MWNTs with epoxy improved the mechanical performance of the composites. The shear strength of unidirectional composites and NOL ring composites increased 33% and 25%, respectively, by loading 1.0 wt% MWNT-COOH. SEM showed the good interface bonding in the composites containing functionalized MWNTs. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed there was an obvious increase in glass transition temperature for the carbon fiber composites after adding 1.0 wt% MWNT-COOH.
