A three story hotel in Irving, Texas, home to some of the worst soil conditions in the nation, was underpinned with piers that were belled in the active zone. As a result of errors by the engineer and/or contractor, the piers uplifted and moved the building to extreme deflections that exceeded 8". To mitigate the problem, 360 - 18" diameter x 35' deep drilled piers were installed under the building in five foot of headroom. Despite the low headroom, the new piers were drilled into gray shale a minimum penetration of 10'. This process was completed while keeping the hotel in full operation with no interruption in services and minimal effects to the landscaping and appearance.
