The current design of prosthetic sockets does not allow for the dissipation of heat given off by the residual limb of the amputee. The poor thermal conductivity of the prosthetic socket leads to skin problems which make the amputee uncomfortable. A proposed solution is the introduction of a window into the prosthetic socket to increase air circulation. However, the window may create problems with the structural integrity of the socket. The goal of the project is to validate a method by which practitioners can determine the proper placement of the window. The method of photoelasticity is proposed to determine the strains in the socket to aid in the placement of the window to prevent structural failure. Before photoelasticity can be used in a clinical setting, the accuracy and precision of the system must be determined. Multiple compression tests using a mock residual limb will be performed on an intact socket to determine the accuracy and precision of the photoelasticity method.
