A computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) system improves the initial and evolutional precision of disease identification, reduces the doctorpsilas level of incertitude regarding some diseases, allows monitoring the health status of the patient during new treatment methods, stores images in digital format and generates diagnoses databases that can be used in research, medical practice and specialized teaching. This is a highly important transdisciplinary topic, combining aspects from biosystems (human visual system), image acquisition and processing (medical imagistic), artificial intelligence techniques (neural networks) and information management (databases). The paper presents the research results on diagnosis of diseases of the biological human visual structures, focusing on optimization aspects of the artificial neural networks used for image classification/recognition.
