Global water scarcity, which is one of the major threats to humanity, notonly in the arid or semi-arid regions of the world but in overpopulatedcities as well, is rising. Population expansion and rapid economicdevelopment have increased demands for water tremendously. Irrigationactivities, rather than domestic or industrial activities mainly in manydeveloping countries, consume most of the world’s useable water.Improvement in the efficiency of water utilization, especially in theagricultural sector, will effectively contribute to lessening the magnitude ofthis problem.
