摘要

The sustainability of lake depends on the condition (quality) of the catchment and water spread area because they are directly linked. Any activity or change in the catchment area will have positive or negative impact on the lake. Hence for the better and sustainable development of the lake we require in depth knowledge along with relationship between activities, which are responsible for improvement or deterioration of the development.This present work examines the holistic approach to Lake Development in terms of relevant in-lake and catchment area parameters. The present study utilizes the basic concept of remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) to study the characteristics of catchment area and water spread of the lake. The role of remote sensing as a potential data source of GIS as an analytical tool in developing and management system based on holistic approach has been investigated. The analysis of the area reveals that Man Sagar Lake and its surrounding areas have been in process of degradation for quite some time. The lake water spread has actually reduced considerably. The lake is under high anthropogenic pressure due to encroachments in the catchment area.The result derived from this study may be very useful in ensuring protection of the area, which is under threats. Further GIS database can be used for periodic monitoring and studying the impacts of the development works. The data can be shared by all the implementing agencies to work in coordinated manner to draw suitable action plan.
