The design and the electrochemical characterization of a passive direct methanol fuel cell mini-stack was carried out. An optimization of catalyst loading and fuel concentration for a passive mode operation at room temperature was performed. It was derived that a proper Pt loading is necessary for both anode and cathode side. 4.0 mg cm~(-2) Pt loading seems to be the best compromise between electrode thickness and number of catalytic sites. Methanol concentrations ranging from 1 up to 10 M and an air-breathing operation mode were investigated. A maximum power of about 225 mW was obtained, corresponding to a power density of about 20 mW cm~(-2).
