A form of coal-based hydrogen economy allied to chemicals and gas production was created in Germany in World War 1 and then further developed, world-wide, up to the mid 20th Century and displaced by oil and gas-based hydrogen by the late 20th Century.Coal conversion to hydrogen has been done in the past and major advances in coal gasification and gas treatment have taken place since the 1980s and in a future Hydrogen Economy, the direct conversion of coal to hydrogen in Australia may not be appropriate and other processing should be examined and rigorously evaluated.
