The need to integrate large systems into complex "systems of systems" is evident in multiple problem domains. Yet industry testimonials describe multimillion-dollar expenditures for unsuccessful software systems integration efforts. Surrounding internet connectivity, middleware technologies, and standards (such as, extensible Markup Language - XML) continues to be promoted. Despite these promotions, difficulties integrating large systems increase due to heightened expectations for new capabilities - in an industry where technology choices constantly expand. Current approaches to software integration are costly, time consuming, and frequently yield suboptimal results. Current system integrations suffer from the following problems:1. Brittle - easily fail with slight perturbations to the information transacted2. Difficult to maintain as systems are upgraded3. Complicated to scale when additional information and constituent systems, are required4. Cannot provide clear, concise implementations among diverse sub-system sets as complexity increases.
