We examine the nonlinear bending behavior of functionally graded piezoelectric actuators under AC electric fields in a combined numerical and experimental investigation. The functionally graded piezoelectric actuators consist of many thin soft PZT layers. The contribution of domain wall motion to the elastic compliance, piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric permittivity in PZT layers is evaluated, and a nonlinear finite element analysis is done to examine the effects of the amplitude and frequency of electric fields, number of layers, and property gradation on the deflection, sound level and internal stresses for actuators. In order to confirm the numerical results, bending tests on various functionally graded piezoelectric actuators are performed, and the deflection and sound level are measured.
