THE STABLE ISOTOPE OF HYDROGEN AS ANINDICATOR OF MEDIOUNA LANDFILL LEACHATEPOLLUTION(Casablanca, Morocco)

Since 1986 the municipal solid wastes produced by the city of Casablanca arestockpiled in Mediouna landfi ll installed on old quarries without liner or leachatecollection system. A previous study had showed an advance of the pollution plumefrom landfi ll, according to the faults affecting the fractured aquifer matrix. The aim ofour study is to use the unique isotopic characteristics observed in landfi ll leachate asan indicator for confi rming whether contamination is from landfi ll or some other localsources. Oxygen-18 and deuterium investigation was undertaken on samples collected,from wells upstream and downstream the landfi ll. Compared to hydrogen and oxygenisotopes of local precipitation samples of some wells show an enrichment of hydrogenisotope values. This data is used to delimit pollution plume extension.The deuterium isuseful as an environmental indicator for municipal landfill pollution.
