PURPOSE:To effectively perform the laser separation of a hydrogen isotope, by using halogenated ethane having a specific chemical formula as working substance. CONSTITUTION:Halogenated ethane having a chemical formula shown by a formula is used. In this case, in a reaction tower 30, tritium-containing water and the working substance AH are countercurrently contacted in the presence of a catalyst and the hydrogen isotope of the working substance is substituted with tritium in water to move tritium to the working substance. The unreacted working substance AH and the tritium substitute AT of the working substance are sent to a laser induction reactor 32 where the substitute AT is irradiated with laser beam to decompose into objective hydrogen isotope-containing substance BT and another substance C. The working substance is especially suitable for the separation of tritium or deuterium. For example, H of 2-chloro-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane which is a kind of chlorotetrafluoroethane is substituted with tritium to obtain CF3CTClF.
