Seamless navigation and position has become one of the most important requirements for many commercial applicationsas well as services like search and rescue. Once E110 and E119 legislations are enforced in Japan, more than 80millioncell phones with GNSS receivers will be in demand within the next couple of years. However, the current GNSStechnology is still unable to provide accurate and reliable position services in an indoor area like underground stations,building or premises. In order to overcome such problems, we have developed a new indoor positioning system calledIndoor Messaging System (IMES). The main feature of the system is to transmit the 3-D position of the transmitter alongwith other information. IMES uses GNSS like signals with position and other information embedded in the navigationmessage. Standard GNSS receivers can receive IMES signal without any hardware modification. The receiver only needssome modification to decode the navigation message, which generally can be achieved by modifying the firmware of thereceiver. IMES is also capable for seamless navigation. In this paper, we will present about the concept, structure andsome experiment results of IMES.
