Initial Manufacturing Exchange Specification (IMES): IMES Concept Document forManufacturing Systems Integration

An Initial Manufacturing Exchange Specification (IMES) is the specification of aninterface between software to be used as a means of improving interoperability between independently developed manufacturing software systems. These specifications will be developed under the auspices of NIST's Systems Integrated for Manufacturing Applications (SIMA) Program. Working in conjunction with industry and with standards-making bodies, projects within the SIMA Program are developing solutions supporting manufacturing activities for mechanical products, electrical products, plant construction, and other areas. This document provides the characteristics of an IMES and describes the process by which an IMES is developed.
