Energy and power management are critical challenges in the design of future computing systems - from the smallest handhelds to the largest datacenters. While there has been a large body of work in this area, several opportunities exist for even greater power savings in future systems. Current energy consumption in most devices is often orders of magnitude higher than the minimum energy computed from fundamental principles of energy for information transfer. The need to power mobile devices off of solar energy or other alternative heat sources, and the ever greater compaction of systems without requiring liquid cooling poses interesting challenges. This panel brings together distinguished practitioners in the area, with expertise across multiple fields, to explore the question of where the next ten-fold improvement in power management is likely to come from.
