After studying the geometry of spots irradiated by a Nd:YAG laser, particular setup of its operational parameters was made to produce crater-like spots that would be favourable in generating hydrodynamic effects in wet lubrication. The irradiated spots were arranged as in-lined (IN) and staggered (ST) patterns on DF2 tool steel plates, which, together with their non-patterned (NP) counterparts, were slid against ASSAB 17 steel pin. Test results showed that ST gave superior tribological characteristics, followed by IN and NP.
