An adaptive element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) based on the gradient of strain energy is implemented. The schemes, including the principle explanation, the arithmetic analysis and numerical implementation, are introduced. An error estimate based on background cells during the numerical integral and a local domain refinement technique is given. Through analysing a numerical example of an infinite plate with a circular hole,the strain energy gradient-based adaptive EFGM procedure is verified. Furthermore, a strain energy gradient-based adaptive EFG model for an elastic cylinder in contacting with a rigid plane is discussed. These numerical examples show that the automatic adaptive EFGM procedure is valid and effective.
