A two-cell BA5372 Li/MnO2 battery which replaces theenvironmentally undesirable HgO/Zn BA 1372 battery has been developedand is in production. In addition, a lithium manganese dioxide cell(CR-1/2AA) is being manufactured for use in a night vision goggle system(NVGS) for the US Navy. Performance and safety characteristics of theseunits are described. A spiral wound 5.5-Ah Li/MnO2 C-cell hasbeen developed for electronic applications. The performance of this cellas a function of rate and temperature is dependent on both designparameters and electrolyte composition. Performance and safety testresults are described in detail and potential applications such as usein emergency positioning indicating radio beacons are discussed
