Being one of the most important parts of ecosystem, microorganism is always the focus in ecotoxicological studies. On the other hand, flow cytometry has been proved as a valuable and powerful tool in microorganism studies for its outstanding ability in directly and rapid demonstration and quantification of both characterics of unicell and population heterogeneity in a community. (Rego et al., 2000) Flow cytometry has only recently been applied to ecotoxicological studies (Yu Y and Kong FX, 2006), but it greatly promotes the progress of toxicological techniques (Li Z et al., 2004).This paper will review the recent progress in the research on microorganism membrane system by flow cytometry in ecotoxicological studies.
