Based on the prototype of Wind Electricity Conversion System (WECS), this paper presents a selfadaptive control strategy for doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) applied to variable speed constant frequency wind generation system. The strategy mainly depends on wind speed estimation, the wind turbine and generator parameters. Wind speed is estimated by the output power and the efficiency of the generator. In the adaptive Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) strategy, an estimated maximum efficiency is adopted by the maximum tip-speed ratio tracker, without the measurement of mechanical quantities. The steady and dynamic performance of the control strategy had been verified for efficacy by MATLAB/Simulink software and on experiment platform of a 2kW laboratory variable speed constant frequency wind generation system. WECS can operate at the expected points in the wide range of wind velocities. The controller may be applicable to all doubly fed generators, including brushless double fed machine.
