A high technological navigator for small satellites,named SSN, was developed by Space Engineering inthe frame of a technological innovation programfinanced by ASI, the Italian Space Agency1. Thenavigator is based on fuzzy logic advanced technique.Small Satellite Navigator was initially developed andvalidated in a simulation environment based onMatlab/Simulink, then ported in C, and transferred to adedicated hardware platform.This paper mainly deals with the hardware demonstratorof the SSN. The SSN platform is based on a digitalsignal processor (the ADSP21160) whose performancesare comparable with many flight processors. The goalwas the characterization of all the navigator algorithms,in order to obtain reliable benchmarks for each singleroutine, in term of processing power and memoryrequirement. The obtained results prove thecompatibility of the fuzzy approach with most of thecommercial flight processing boards. A software portinganalysis is also illustrated for the most commonprocessors used in small satellites missions.
