This study was performed for a purpose of developing a passive sampler, which can quantify formaldehyde in indoor air by sampling for about 1 hour. The method to investigate this time is a one to measure the fluorescence of s-triazolo[3,4-a]-phthalazine which comes from the reaction of 1-hydrazinophthalazineand formaldehyde by High Performance Liquid Chromatograph with fluorescence detector.A passive sampler to be made is the fillng of alkali-impregnated silica gel of 0.8g into a porous tube made of polytetrafluoroethylene resin.The uptake rate of the passive sampler is 3.06 μg/ppm/hr, which is equivalent to 42ml/min of sampling rate of a pump method. The repeatability of the passive sampler is 6.9 % in coefficient of variation. The minimum measuring limit is 10 ppb of formaldehyde with 1 hour sampling. It has been recognized that the measured value of present method and DNPH pump method (2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine active sampler method) has a significant correlation.
