The prime motivation of this project is the mitigation of fouling in heat exchanger operations. In order to enhance heat transfer and mitigate fouling in boiling processes, a new type of vapor-liquid-solid (3-phase) circulating fluidized bed boiling system has been designed, combining a circulating fluidized bed with boiling heat transfer. Experiments are conducted in a glass riser column of square cross sectional area 21.5 mm × 11mm, and height 1000mm. The set-up uses varied solid particles (stainless steel balls, and glass beads) to investigate the effect of particle properties and particle size on the rate of heat transfer, as well as, to study the cleaning effect of the particles. Experimental results show an enhancement of the boiling curve. Flow visualization studies concerning flow hydrodynamics within the riser column are also being undertaken. Results are presented and discussed.
