This article describes some recent developments at our Institute and opportunities created by a fusion of photonics with nanoscale science and technology as well as with biomedical research. This fusion has opened up the new frontiers of Nanophotonics and Biophotonics. Nanostructured random media such as polymeric nanocomposites are showing great promises for many photonics/optoelectronics applications, the ones specifically discussed here are for photovoltaics and photorefractivity. Ordered nanostructures such as photonic crystals, discussed here, exhibit new phenomena which can be exploited for novel applications. Polymeric nanoparticles show great potential for optical diagnostics and targeted optically tracked and light-activated therapy. Some examples of these biophotonics applications for nanomedicine are also presented.
