Airports are not highways. HMA mixes used on airfields must bedesigned for aircraft and airport requirements and not for trucks andhighway requirements. This paper describes the factors that influencethe HMA design for use on airfields. Airfield HMA mixes must meetFAA requirements of the P-401 specification as part of the grantrequirements between the FAA and the airport.Many airfield dimensions, such as runway and taxiway widths, arebased on aircraft wingspan. Information on the type of aircraft, aircraftgross load, gear loading and gear location is discussed along with aircraftwander with respect to the centerline.HMA placed on airfields has unique requirements. However, theamount of HMA placed on airfields is a small percentage of the totalamount of HMA placed by contractors. The FAA specifications mustchange as the industry changes.This paper is limited to civilian aviation requirements. There aresome subtle differences between military and civilian aviationrequirements.
