A method for conceptual design of mechanical products was proposed based on the fuzzy closeness degree in the theory of fuzzy sets pattern recognition: at first, the fuzzy sets of the characteristic factors of each kind of available products and those of the products designed in terms of the fuzzy description of the users' requirements. Secondly, the similarity degree between the products designed and every kind of available products were gotten by calculating the fuzzy closeness degree between fuzzy sets and synthesizing the weight of the characteristic factors. Finally, a certain type of product was selected according to the greatest- similarity degree criterion, thus the conceptual design of the product was fulfilled. It also presents a method of distributing weight to characteristic factors according to the mean square-root among classes. The methods was applied to the electrical apparatus expert system designing-oriented.
