THE FERGANA VALLEY PEACE BUILDING PROJECT - A CIDA / CSCE WATER MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The Fergana Valley Peace Building Project was initiated in 1999, funded through theCanadian International Development Agency - Peace building Fund, and managed by CSCE InternationalAffairs Committee.In the Fergana Valley Region of Central Asia, water-management problems involve both social andtechnical issues. The social issues related to water are pervasive and impact on every aspect of society.This project brought together community development specialists and technical experts, to support thedevelopment of a foundation for resolving conflict related to water management issues at the community,local and national government levels in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.The project resulted in 27,000 people gaining access to clean drinking water. As well initial results indicatethat the project will make a positive contribution to long-term peace and prosperity in the Fergana Valleythrough the confidence building that resulted from the skills gained and practiced by the rural residents ofthe Fergana Valley.
