The paper is motivated by changes experienced in the fields of traffic types and volumes, network structures and market trends; it concentrates on the metro core. Assuming a possible RPR-WDM network architecture, a cost-effective way is proposed for increasing network load without increasing the electrical components of the network nodes, so without increasing dramatically the provider's capex. Based on flexible optical devices, an automatic logical node reordering process to improve the RPR (resilient packet ring) layer performance is proposed.
