Recently, a reduced ignition propensity (IP) cigarette has been marketed nation-wide in the United States. The new cigarette uses "banded" tobacco column paper to achieve IP reduction. This report discusses a model we have developed to understand theoretical substrate "ignition" and self-extinction properties of banded cigarettes. The results of the model are used to discuss the potential performance of small samples selected from large batch sizes of banded cigarettes. Also, the report discusses the mechanism by which banded cigarettes achieve IP reduction and manufacturing concerns related to banded cigarettes.
