The "Montedison Factory" in Assisi, an existing reinforced concrete industrial building over fifty years old, has been retrofitted to transform it in the "Lirick Theatre". Due to the age of the construction, the concrete was dramatically decayed. Structural works has been carried out in order to rehabilitate the r/c decayed elements and to strengthen the building to resist the actions prescribed by present codes, including earthquake. Traditional steel and r/c elements, respectful of the architectural and historical worth, have been inserted to strengthen the structure. Innovative materials have been widely used: CFRP strips have been used to improve tensile strength; "Exocem PVA", a Synthetic Fibre Reinforced Mortar (SFRM), have been laid on the shell surfaces both to rehabilitate and to strengthen the thin shells of the construction. Both the design and the realization of the building are illustrated. The design strategies and the strengthening techniques used in the rehabilitation are reported, making special reference to the specific new materials and adequate application techniques adopted for the repair, rejuvenation and enhancement of existing r/c structures.
